LONDON, June 26 (Reuters) - Pfizer Inc's Viagra said on Monday it would launch a new drug in Britain, following the launch of its first pills for erectile dysfunction.

The erectile dysfunction pill is the latest in a string of drugmakers to test the efficacy of Viagra as an anti-impotence treatment, according to a research review by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a trade group that includes Merck & Co, Pfizer Inc and Bristol-Myers Squibb Inc.

The British company said it expected to launch the new drug, called sildenafil citrate, in the U. S. next year.

Sildenafil, which is sold under the brand name Viagra, is a blue pill that works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping men get and keep an erection when they are sexually aroused.

Pfizer said its first Viagra tablet would cost about $3 a pill and had been launched in Britain in 2003.

"Our first launch is a big step forward in the ongoing research and development of the medicines for erectile dysfunction, which has the potential to reduce the prevalence of these conditions and increase overall health and well-being," said David Brennan, a Pfizer spokesman.

The first product to be launched in Britain will be called an "E-Pharm" and will cost between $15 and $30.

Viagra has been one of the world's most popular drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction since it was approved for the treatment in 1998. It was originally developed to treat a medical problem called angina.

Pfizer is testing sildenafil citrate as an anti-impotence treatment at the American College of Cardiology and the European Society for the Study of the Erectile Function.

Viagra has a long history of clinical use, dating back to ancient times when it was used to treat impotence. It is the first drug approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men over 40 and is now on the World Health Organisation's list of essential medicines.

Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping men get and keep an erection when they are sexually aroused.

The drug was first tested in the early 1990s in Britain and in the United States in 1998. It has since been launched in the United States.

Pfizer says it has seen an increase in sales of the drug and that more men are taking the drug.

Viagra is still an important treatment for impotence and is widely used by millions of men worldwide.

"We are pleased to launch this new medication," said Dr. Nabil Darish, president of Pfizer's medical research and development group.
